    MIchael Moloney

Michael Moloney was born in Waterford in 1905, and went to school in Mount Sion, Waterford. He was tall for his age and was of a quiet disposition. As a schoolboy he made first contact with the story of his country's wrongs when he joined the local sluagh of Fianna na h-Éireann.

It is necessary here, for the benefit of the rising generation, to outline the scope of this organisation and its mission. It was founded by the late Countess Markeviez during a period when British imperialism was coming to be looked upon as respectable here. The baden-Powell boy scout movement in Ireland was one of the off-shoots of that new form of respectability and its aims were to make its youthful members dutiful children of the Empire. The natural resource of the Gael, thank God, has never left

    Wednesday, 20th July 2011

The Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland has warmly welcomed the introduction of newborn screening for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) which officially commenced on Friday 1st July 2011.

Screening for CF has been introduced as an addition to the already existing National New Born Blood Spot Screening Programme in Ireland.

Philip Watt, CEO of the CFAI stated "CF is being added to the conditions tested for in the "heel prick test" for all new born babies for the first time in Ireland. This is a significant advancement as it means the treatment of CF can begin from birth.

Before now it could be weeks, months or even years before parents were told their child had CF. This is an important step towards improving CF servcies in Ireland, but we still have a long way to go to before we have the servcies and supports our

  • Data on incidents reported in 2010 published by HSE and the State Claims Agency

    Wednesday, 20th July 2011

The HSE and the State Claims Agency has published details of the number of incidents of harm and near misses, which were reported by hospitals and community based healthcare facilities in 2010. The State Claims Agency (SCA) works with the HSE to record and analyse incidents that are reported in our healthcare system.

Recording this information and examining it is an essential part of developing the patient safety agenda. The information informs future planning of health services, allows analysis of trends and gives services an opportunity to consider their own record in terms of patient safety. This forms a vital part of learning where issues exist so that steps can be taken to improve services.

At a briefing on the new figures Dr Phillip Crowley, HSE National Director of Quality and Patient Safety, commented; "We have taken the step to jointly publish

  • Tips for Reusing Waste

    Wednesday, 20th July 2011

Reusing items is quick and easy to do - in fact, you're probably already reusing a lot of household products so why not see what else you can do. It's easy. Instead of throwing out an item, try to reuse it in some way. You may already do this a lot, so just do it more e.g. use an empty jam jar for storage. And it's free! If you are simply reusing an item you have already bought, it saves you from buying another.

Some tips for reusing household items:

    - Get your old shoes re-heeled instead of buying another pair.- Buy products with refillable solutions e.g. washing powder, detergents, salt and pepper mills. - Use washable dishcloths instead of disposable wipes. - Take your packed lunch in a sandwich box instead of wrapping it in kitchen foil or

  • Waterford Wildlife - Pheasants

    Wednesday, 20th July 2011

    One In The Hand

Pheasants are said by some authorities to have been introduced to Ireland by the Normans and by others to have been introduced about the end of the 18th century. Both are correct insofar as it is not a native Irish species and two forms of pheasant were introduced at different times. The pheasant was almost certainly introduced to Britain and France by the Romans who kept them in aviaries for domestic use. The name derives from the Greek ‘Phasis', a river south of the Caucasus on the Black Sea where it is thought to have been the origin of the Brown Pheasant (Phasianus c. colchicus). This is likely to have been the species brought to Ireland by the Normans. It was not until the late eighteenth century that a white-collared species was introduced to Britain – the

The dangers of overfeeding your pet

Obesity is an increasingly significant problem in dogs and cats, and although there are many contributory factors and variables, the bottom line is simple: pets become overweight when the calories supplied exceed the amount required to maintain normal bodily function.

When an excess of food is consumed, the body must deal with it by storing it in the form of fat, as it is unable to burn it all up in the process of providing energy. The increase in body weight is only the beginning of the problems associated with obesity, and many of the associated health issues have previously been discussed in detail in this column. They include diabetes mellitus, arthritis and joint disease, breathing difficulties and heart disease, heat stroke, incontinence, pancreatitis, hepatic lipidosis..... the list goes on and on.

    Studies have proved that the

Remedies, exercise and breathing to treat headaches

Last week I wrote about different methods of treating headaches. Many of those methods were all about addressing the maintaining cause and eliminating the source before it becomes a problem. But it is also important to treat the symptoms too. When I see patients in my clinics, I often recommend using homeopathic remedies, breathing and exercise to treat the headaches. Of course, if you have any worries about a persistent headache, you should consult with a registered medical professional.

There are many homeopathic remedies that can help with headaches. As ever, choosing the right remedy is all about observing the symptoms:

    - For a throbbing and violent headache after a fright or a shock, try Aconite.- For a throbbing headache in the back of the head, eyes, forehead and temples, worst for light and for

    Wednesday, 20th July 2011

A funny video posted by Home Instead Senior Care has received more than 3.2 million views in less than a month.

The video, starring senior Mary Maxwell, age 73, offers a humorous look at ageing and reminds us "laughter is the best medicine." The seven-minute-long video was filmed at Home Instead's annual convention in the USA.

In her "Dear Lord" prayer, Maxwell recognises some of the perils of growing old, such as "turning your left turn signal on in the morning and leaving it on all day," the appearance of "non-life-threatening skin growths large enough to name after deceased pets and relatives," and "driving up to a curbside mailbox and ordering a burger and fries."

"Mary was so funny and well-received at the convention, we decided to share

Obesity levels in Ireland are high and rising. To tackle this problem here are some tips on foods to increase in your diet to help burn excess fat and reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity

    Starting Off

The worst thing you can do when trying to burn fat is to not eat. By starving yourself you drastically slow down your metabolism to conserve fuel, and what little food you do consume, your body will try to store as fat to combat the starvation. A better way to lose weight is to eat more fat burning foods.

Google AlertWhen a company which has it's European Headquarters here in Ireland is called 'evil' and 'immoral' by M.P.s in The House of Commons you tend to sit up and take notice. The particular company that was being referred to was Google and the reason it had enraged M.P.s in London was because even though it has a big operation there and conducts a lot of business there it pays no corporate tax. It does this by having all of its financial transactions finished here in Ireland. And the company here is …
