    Wednesday, 22nd June 2011

The changing needs of the older pet

As an animal gets older, their needs change, as they are increasingly prone to health issues such as obesity, impaired mobility and organ failure. When a pet is considered elderly varies between individuals, and between species and breed, e.g. cats over ten years of age. Some giant breeds of dog, e.g. St. Bernard, are considered old when they are older than six. Small breeds often age more slowly than large breeds.

Regular exercise remains vitally important as your pet ages. A common occurrence is that older dogs can keep going on long walks, but suffer joint pain, have difficulty rising and appear very tired that night or the next day. This means that more regular, shorter walks and exercise sessions, e.g. ball playing, will keep your pet healthy, mobile and at an appropriate weight without

    Aries: March 21 – April 20

Even if you feel that life is a little sombre, you might be surprised and delighted at how swiftly the mood will shift as we approach high summer – yes, it is only just around the corner – and even though there isn't quite as much money as there was last year, at least you will have learned the value of what you actually possess. There is also the precious and special gift of friendship around you. And new life, as well.

    Taurus: April 21 – May 21

Looking at the newspapers and all the dire news found within their pages can become a trifle frustrating, especially when we realise that there is little that can be done about anything. Perhaps it would better to move on and deal with issues

  • Strange but - True!

    Wednesday, 22nd June 2011

By Bill Sones and Rich Sones, PhD

    Q. Before people mastered the gifts of reading and writing and so couldn't "sign on the dotted line," what symbolic act did they use to enter into an agreement?

    A. It was during the Middle Ages that a businesslike kiss was employed as a legal way to seal contracts and business agreements, says Sheril Kirshenbaum in "The Science of Kissing." Many illiterate men would draw an "X" on the line and kiss it to make it legal. This carried over into today's "X" symbolizing a kiss, as well as into the expression "sealed with a kiss." The kiss between a bride and groom was also viewed as marking a kind of legal business agreement, crystallizing all the responsibilities marriage entailed.

    Q. Have you ever been inclined to read a dictionary from cover to cover? How long

    Biblical perspectives for living

    PETER'S CALL

At the time of Jesus' birth, Israel was under the domination of the Roman Empire. Some Israelites were anticipating a deliverer sent by God to bring comfort to Israel (Luke 2:25, 38), and when Anna, a devout widow, learned of the birth of Jesus she eagerly told others that God's salvation had come.

But thirty years later, the Romans still

controlled the land. However, word started to spread of a prophet in the wilderness, a wild looking man dressed in camel's hair and eating locusts and wild honey (Mark 1:6). Crowds were flocking to hear the preaching of John, who boldly proclaimed the need for people to repent of their sins and prepare the way for the coming of the Lord (Mark 1:1-5).

Among those who came to hear John the Baptist preach was Andrew, a Galilean fisherman. Realising

  • Fine Gael Waterford City Councillor John Cummins has welcomed the

    Wednesday, 22nd June 2011

decision by Oxigen Environmental to withdraw their application for a licence to operate a waste transfer facility on Waterford City's North Wharf.

Cllr. Cummins stated "I have had numerous calls, emails and texts from residents across Waterford City on this issue since the story broke, all voicing their opposition to the proposed waste transfer facility and I welcome Oxigen Environmentalist prudent decision to withdraw their application".

    Cllr. Cummins stated "With such

    opposition from residents, the

wider business community and the entire body of elected representatives in Waterford City, across the political divide, it would have been madness for the company to proceed with their application. I believe there are plenty of suitable sites which Oxigen should now look at, none more so than Belview where Waterford City

Council's waste water treatment plant is located".

    Cllr. Cummins concluded by

commending the Waterford City North representatives for their work

  • Waterford Wildlife - Basking Sharks

    Wednesday, 22nd June 2011

    Basking Shark

The Basking Shark is the largest fish that occurs in Irish and Waterford waters and the second largest fish in the world (the largest being the whale shark). It is easily recognised by its very large size (usually about 7.5m but may be as large as 12m – 40feet). This, and its habit of swimming close to the surface with its snout, first dorsal fin and tail-fin breaking the surface leads some to believe that this is two or three sharks swimming together. It feeds by filtering huge quantities of seawater through its five very large gill slits and trapping planktonic organisms on its gill rakers. These include zoo and phyto plankton of various kinds but also tiny crustaceans and jellyfish. The colour is greyish-brown to black with lighter mottling, the gills being bright red. They weigh between 3,500

This problem is getting worse amongst our children. Early data from the 'Growing up in Ireland' study indicates that a quarter of three year-old children are now overweight or obese. Finding your true purpose and passion

Most of us are not quite clear about our purpose in life. Some of us are pre-occupied with worries, bills, responsibilities and work, or in some cases simply have too much idle time to give a single thought to what our purpose is. We are all born with a unique life purpose, but it is up to each of us to find that purpose.

A life of purpose is doing something that we enjoy. It is a gift to ourselves that we share out with others. Yet most people are unaware of their purpose, and may find themselves in a place right now where they are unhappy and disconnected. The question is, how do we align ourselves to find our true purpose in life?

First we must quieten down our overactive minds. This is best done in

    Salt

According to research from Sweden men are consuming way too much salt for their own good – almost double the recommended daily allowance.

    What is salt?

Salt is a commonly occurring mineral, the technical name of which is Sodium Chloride, it is generally 40% sodium and 60% chlorine. It is the sodium part of salt that is important - the body needs a certain amount of it to function properly, but it is extremely harmful in excess.

    The human body needs Salt

Not only does salt help control your fluid balance, it also controls the way your muscles and nerves work. Our bodies automatically regulate how much salt, or sodium, there is present.

  • A Government Success

Once in a blue moon. As rare as hen's teeth. A Government success. Each of those three sentences are as unusual and as rare as each other. But the last one seems to be about to take place. The Government has announced that it plans to give each child in the State a second year of free pre-school. It might not sound like earth shattering news but if it does happen then it could be one of the most significant things that this Government has done since it took office. Any money that is given over to education is a …
