  • The Corporal from Portlaw

    Wednesday, 29th June 2011

    Recently we had the President of the United States visiting Ireland and going back to the place his ancestor came from, Moneygall.

    When Fulmouth Kearney left Ireland for the USA, little did he think that one day, he would put a sleepy little village like Moneygall on the world map. The story of ‘The Corporal' from Portlaw is not as glamorous, but equally interesting. His story begins like this;

    An American named Ed Muller from the Boston area of Mass. in the USA knew from ‘hand me down' family talk, that he had Irish ancenstry on his mother's side. So he began to unravel his family background, and discovered the following.

    His grandfather was a Martin Joseph Whalen (also known as Phelan), who had married Alice Power from Dunhil, Co. Waterford. They were married

  • Waterford Minor Hurlers Thriller - GAA notes by The Villager

    Wednesday, 29th June 2011

    Waterford Minor Hurlers came through a tough test on Saturday evening as they were on the right side of a 4-17 to 3-15 scoreline in their quest for a third consequetive appearance in the Munster Final. On this occasion it was Limerick, following a very impressive showing against Cork, who provided the opposition and what a show of character from both sides. In a game that provided the attendance with everything from superb skill, great endeavour, determination and indeed, raw emotion, it took twenty minutes of extra time to see the young Deise side through to the Pairc Ui Chaoimh showdown. Before the game it was proving difficult to gauge how good the opposition were.

    The oddsmakers had a slight fancy for Limerick courtesy of a very convincing win over a fancied Cork outfit in their opening game of the competition.

    Blues Buzzing After Super Result

    As you'll no doubt have read elsewhere, the Blues had a fantastic result at Turner's Cross last Friday, their third straight win over Cork on their home patch. Morale in the camp is sky-high at the minute, with three excellent wins and one frankly unlucky defeat in their last four games under the new regime. Friday's result was a bit special though. The Blues are the only side to beat Cork this year, and the manner of the win, first coming from behind, and then regaining the lead after losing it, shows great character as well as ability. Next Friday's home match against Longford Town has once again become a big game, and the team could really do with your support to make it three wins on the spin, and kick on further up the table.

    Cox competes against FG veterans for presidency

    nomination

    After just over 100 days at the government helm, the honeymoon is over for Fine Gael as battle lines are drawn within the party over the contentious issue of who to nominate for the presidency.

    Two sitting MEPs and one former MEP have until early July to canvass party colleagues for their vote at the selection convention, with Fine Gael newcomer Pat Cox facing a growth in support for his rivals Gay Mitchell and Mairead McGuinness.

    The ballot will be taken in secret, with seventy per cent of the vote going to TDs, senators and MEPs, 20 per cent to councillors and 10 per cent to Fine Gael's executive council; however some observers believe rank-and-file members could be heavily influenced by the party's top brass in their choice of candidate.
