  • Trad in the Triangle with Scaoilte

    Free outdoor concert at Christ Church Cathedral Waterford - Sunday 26th June at 12 noon

    Christ Church Cathedral is delighted to announce a new initiative bringing free outdoor concerts to the Viking Triangle on the last Sunday of each month from June to September 2011. The concerts take place in Cathedral Square and seating will be provided.

  • Who's ready for their 15 minutes of fame?

    The semi-final of the Waterford Music Fest's '15 Minutes of Fame' competition is taking place this Thursday night in The Front Lounge. Out of the hundreds of applications, ten acts, which are all from the Munster area, have been chosen to compete in the Waterford Heats. The semi-finalists will perform for three independent judges, with five acts selected to go through to the final. The judges include music promoter Owen Kavanagh, WIT music technology lecturer Mark Graham and Beat 102 103 DJ Rob O Connor. The competition starts at 9.00 p.m. and everyone is urged to get down to The Front Lounge to check it out. There is a €5 entrance fee – with all proceeds going to the Tra Fest.   • New Public Sculpture

    Lismore Castle Arts is delighted to announce the arrival of a new public sculpture by celebrated artist Roman Signer, Ball in Earth (2011). This is the artist's first permanent work in Ireland.

    Visitors are invited to buy a ball bearing at the garden entrance to Lismore Castle Gardens, place the ball in a steel tube in the gardens and listen. The ball rolls to an underground bell which resonates up the steel tube.

    All profits from sale of balls are donated to charity.

    Note admission charge applies for entry into Lismore Castle Gardens.

  • Tall Ships Lunchtime Concert

    Good Shepherd Chapel, Saturday July 2nd, 1pm – 2pm

    Good Shepherd Chapel will be the venue for a special lunchtime concert at 1pm on Saturday July 2nd. The performers include Contempo String Quartet from Galway, Craobh Nua Traditional group from Waterford, Jean Calnan, soprano who sings with Ad Hoc Chorale and De La Salle Senior Choir. There will also be a premier of a new composition by Waterford composer Ben Hanlon.

    Contempo are one of Irelands top four string quartets. This profession group is well known in Waterford having performed recently in the large room. They are just returned from a successful six week tour in Sweden. Their programme will include the popular first movement of Mozart's Eine Kleine Nactmusik.

  • 'Waves' pictured above back in the day!

    During the late 70s and early 80s 'Waves' were one of the top bands on the scene in Waterford entertaining audiences with songs from Neil Young, Santana, Fleetwood Mac, Joni Mitchell, Crosby, Still Nash & Young, Linda Ronstatd and Carol King. Winners of several awards, 'Waves' also won the hearts of audiences from all over. The line up went through a few changes but always had the best of talent. You can catch some of the magic at their reunion gig in The Tower Hotel on Saturday 25th June.

  • Drama bursaries available from Waterford County Council

    The Arts Office of Waterford County Council is offering grant assistance to members of drama groups in the County, who wish to avail of the week long residential Summer School held by the Drama League of Ireland in the University of Limerick. This year the school runs from Saturday 30th July to Saturday 6th August 2011.

  • Waterford Woman admitted to the Royal Irish Academy

    Professor Imelda Maher, (above), Sutherland Chair of European Law at UCD, has been admitted to the Royal Irish Academy at a ceremony in Dublin recently. Professor Maher is a past pupil of St John of God NS, and St Angela's Ursuline Secondary School, Ballytruckle. This is the highest academic honour in Ireland and membership is awarded to those who have achieved distinction in education and research. Professor Maher acknowledged the learning and values she obtained through her education at primary and second level, and the teachers who imbued her with a sense of curiosity and community.

    The Royal Irish Academy (RIA) is Ireland's premier learned body and vigorously promotes excellence in scholarship, recognises achievements in learning, direct research programmes and undertakes its own research projects, particularly in areas relating to Ireland and its heritage.

    Animated State, Waterford's professional dance company is busy working on 'Crossing' a fabulous new show that will premiere in the Theatre Royal on Thursday 30th June and Friday 1st July. 'Crossing' is about sea voyages and fits perfectly into the programme of artistic events surrounding the return of the Tall Ships.

    Children's Summer Music Programme at the WHAT Centre for Arts & Health, Waterford Regional Hospital.

    Monday 11th – Friday 15th July, 10am – 12 noon

    Musicians Leah Clarke and Sarah McCarthy will deliver a weeklong summer music programme for children aged between 8 and 12 years this July. Children will take part in a variety of musical activities, games and creative expression shall be explored and developed. A number of different musical genres will be introduced in this project, including aspects of African, Indonesian, Irish and many more. Children will also build their own musical instrument in the course of the week.

  • Waterford City Dawn Chorus

    The Waterford Healing Arts Trust would like to thank the De La Salle Choir and the Deise Active Retirement Association for performing a wonderful Dawn Chorus at William Vincent Wallace Plaza on Sunday 29th May at the early hour of 7.15 am. The Trust organised this Dawn Chorus as part of the Bealtaine Festival which celebrates creativity in older people. This event was kindly sponsored by the Granville Hotel.

    The Dawn Chorus took place in counties all over Ireland on Sunday 29th May. The choruses happened ideally at a waterfront location making William Vincent Wallace Plaza the perfect location for this event in Waterford.
