Fig Rolls and the old Tramore train

On long training sessions there is a lot involved physically. There's also a lot involved mentally and there's a time when although close to the limit physically, mentally the mind is actually fully alert and active. I'm training for the Ironman triathlon in Regensburg, Germany on August 7th and the weekend training sessions are long - up to 8 hours. On this particular Saturday training session the body is moving for a long time. The mind is as well, and not always in the focus, strength, determination kind of way. It's more interesting when it moves in other directions and today it checks out fig rolls and the old Tramore train.

    Fig Rolls

4 Jacobs fig rolls are consumed in Ireland every second. The amount of fig rolls

By Bill Sones and Rich Sones, PhD

    Q. A woodpecker has no knowledge of bioinspiration or biomimetics but some experts in these fields know the bird quite well. What do they know?

    A. Woodpecker anatomy has inspired a new shock absorber for delicate electronics in plane crashes and bombings, say S. H. Yoon and S. Park in "American Scientist" magazine. Since the birds repeatedly drum their heads against hard surfaces without brain damage, engineers used x-ray scans of a golden-fronted woodpecker to model its shock-absorbing structures, including elastic beak and spongy skull. Then the researchers mimicked key parts of the bird's head with a cylinder made of metal, rubber and porous glass. Diodes and other delicate devices inside the cylinder survived more than 99% of test hits into a wall at a deceleration 60,000 times that of gravity. "Survival was only 74%

  • Your pet's health with John D Owens M.V.B. veterinary surgeon.

The changing needs of the older pet (part 2)

As was discussed in last week's article, older pets are more likely to develop serious health problems, many of which can be prevented or improved by appropriate diet and exercise. Many problems experienced by older pets are often dismissed by owners as inevitable changes that occur in old age. If these problems are ignored and become more progressive, they may have become very serious by the time they are brought to a vet for treatment. This can render them very difficult or even impossible to treat.

Problems such as bad breath or loss of energy or appetite can be early signs of underlying disease processes which are best dealt with by early diagnosis. By taking note of changes in your pet's behaviour and bringing them to your vet's attention, regardless of how innocuous

    Aries: March 21 – April 20

Despite all the financial ups and downs of life, this still promises to be a slightly better time for you. However, you will still need to be careful about getting things you don't really want at knockdown prices at the sales. There is the possibility that someone who has been looking for work over the last few weeks will see some light at the end of their particular tunnel. You might need to be tolerant of the mistakes of a loved one.

    Taurus: April 21 – May 21

Be prepared to push yourself a little harder to achieve your ends – hiding in the shadows gets you nowhere, especially where love is concerned. Al the stress and anxiety you have subjected yourself to over the past few months probably were not worth a hill of beans. You

    Corncrakes

The popular view that the decline of the Corncrake in Ireland and elsewhere is due to changes in farming methods is simplistic and unlikely to be true. It is true that some birds are affected by mowing machines in some areas and this fact is exploited by some conservation organisations to raise money to ‘Save the Corncrake'. However, several other facts are more pertinent and are largely relegated to a subordinate position to progress the agricultural myth. For instance, the decline of the Corncrake was first recorded in the 1800's when the tractor was not even invented. The decline continued into the twentieth century and was first documented in the 1940's by a man named Norris when very few tractors or mowing machines were in operation in Ireland and silage-making was unheard of at that time. Couple this with the
