    A Corner Turned?

Maybe a little soon just yet, but no doubt it was a different Blues who ran amok at Lissywoolen at the weekend, playing with a dash of élan, and producing by far their best display of the season so far. This Thursday (note the earlier matchday!) the Blues take on Roddy Collins' high-flying Monaghan United side in a crunch match that will test the significance of that 3-0 victory on Saturday. You will want to see how they get on against their bogey side, and the team will need every bit of extra support that can be mustered, and the simplest solution to both is to get yourself out to the RSC this Thursday night!

    New Ross Next

After that outstanding league match in prospect, the Blues will be in home action once again the following weekend, a dream draw

Pictured from left are: Michael Garland Waterford Chamber; Michael Walsh, City Manager; Collr. Mary Roche, Mayor; Mr. Brian Hayes, T.D., Minister of State; Mr. Tom Murrane, Waterford Chamber of Commerce.

In April 2001, the "John's River Preliminary Report" was submitted to the Office of Public Works (OPW) outlining a scheme, which would alleviate flooding in the John's River Catchment, Waterford City. The report recommended floodwalls and embankments be constructed along the banks of part of the John's River and the River Suir to contain a flood within the channel along with other supplementary works.

The design levels for the scheme were set at protection against a 200yr flood in tidal areas and a 100yr flood for areas above the tidal zone

The OPW commissioned an Environmental Impact Statement, which was completed in 2002.

  • George's Street

    Wednesday, 18th May 2011

    The ‘Art' of The City

George's Street will again be transformed for this year's Spraoi Festival with a collection of overhead art. A similar instillation last year won widespread praise. This coming Saturday and Sunday Spraoi will run workshops in George's Street where members of the public can make a piece of art that will be hung over the street on Spraoi weekend. This is a free event running from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm, all ages are welcome and it's a great opportunity to positively enliven the city. Spraoi's idea will also be transferred to Carlow and Kilkenny this summer. The Three Sisters project will celebrate the region's three rivers through overhead street art, pieces produced at the other two locations will also hang in Waterford for Spraoi weekend.

  • Mountain rescue in Galtee mountains

    Wednesday, 18th May 2011

Last Saturday week South Eastern Mountain Rescue Association (SEMRA) were contacted by the Gardai regarding 3 people missing in the Galtee mountains.  At the time the team was on a training exercise in Ballykeeffe Quarry, Kilkenny. SEMRA responded with a full team call out and members of the team rapidly made their way to the Glen of Aherlow to establish base.

The 3 had been walking in the mountains when the weather disimproved and a heavy fog descended. Visibility was poor, reduced to only 50 metres resulting in the walkers getting lost. They then realised that while they had a GPS with them, they had forgotten to bring a map. With no sign of the fog clearing and the wind so strong it was capable of blowing an adult over, they wisely called 112 and asked for Mountain Rescue.

Michael Power Team Leader tells us "Once SEMRA established base they began to communicate with the missing

  • Spectacular Airshow planned for Tramore for Summer 2012!!

    Wednesday, 18th May 2011

Plans have started to stage an Airshow in Tramore, Co.Waterford which the organisers say could attract up to 40,000 spectators and generate close to €1million for the local economy.

Among those behind the proposal, set for summer 2012, is Mr Graham Kennedy, a local Entrepreneur and Mr Michael Nolan, an Air Traffic Control Officer at Waterford Airport. They are seeking permission from Tramore Town Council and Waterford County Council for the venture which, they say, would cost about €60,000 to stage. Permission is also required for use of The Promenade as a viewing area.

Mr Nolan said Tramore was an ideal location, with several advantages considering the aerial aspect of an air display, which in this instance would take place entirely over water along the seafront. Among the attractions is the ample space available to accommodate free movement of a large volume

    Wednesday, 18th May 2011

Cllr. Jim D'Arcy has praised the first phase of the City Council's Control of Horses Policy 2011, which consisted of a 3-day "Horse Amnesty". He says that control of horses is an issue of major concern to residents citywide and he welcomes the council's efforts to alleviate the problem. "The council, in conjunction with the gardai, organised a welfare event for horse owners who are struggling to care for their horses. The event took place over 3 days in Carrickpherish, Kilbarry and Williamstown and allowed for owners to surrender horses that they are no longer in a position to take care of. Free veterinary advice was offered." Cllr. D'Arcy says that a large number of horse owners engaged with the process, with a veterinary inspection, de-worming and de-licing being carried out on 84 horses and one horse being handed over.

  • The Over 50 population is suffering in silence

    Wednesday, 18th May 2011

Ashley Korn, Veronica Ranieri, Stephen Shannon

A once lively and active woman of 66 has seemingly lost all enthusiasm and motivation. She sleeps all day and stays up all night and is far less involved in household chores and activities with her grandchildren. She complains of worry about her health but her medical issues are not the root cause of such a disturbance in her daily life. She can no longer concentrate on things that she used to enjoy like the crossword puzzle in the paper she used to do every morning. Her daughter cannot understand this change in behavior and feels like her mother has lost part of her personality. She is confused and feels helpless because she cannot figure out how to help her or who

Google AlertWhen a company which has it's European Headquarters here in Ireland is called 'evil' and 'immoral' by M.P.s in The House of Commons you tend to sit up and take notice. The particular company that was being referred to was Google and the reason it had enraged M.P.s in London was because even though it has a big operation there and conducts a lot of business there it pays no corporate tax. It does this by having all of its financial transactions finished here in Ireland. And the company here is …
