The speaker will be Jenny Nolan, Sec. of the poultry section at the Iverk Show & Junior Rep. for the Irish Society of Poultry Fanciers in Ireland. Jenny has a passion for all things poultry and recently appeared on the RTE programme Ear to the Ground.

    Due to current renovation work in the library the meeting will be held in the function room of the Carraig Hotel and there will be a charge of €3 to cover costs, with U18s free.

    Bord Bia announced the details for Bloom 2011, Ireland's largest gardening, food and family festival which is celebrating its fifth year. Bloom will take place once again in the Phoenix Park, Dublin from Thursday June 2nd to Monday June 6th.

    The event will showcase the best of Ireland's horticulture and food industry and key attractions this year include an Irish Craft Garden in association with the Crafts Council of Ireland to celebrate the Year of Craft; Bloom's first international garden from China and the new Bord Bia Food Village. Waterford Institute of Technology will host an education unit in the Nursery & Floral Marquee at this year's event.

  • Vintage Car Run providing Radiotherapy in the South East

    Classic and vintage run of cars, motorbikes, tractors, lorries, scooters and stationery engines for SERT South East Radiotherapy Trust. SERT is a Waterford charity set up to provide transport for cancer patients from throughout the south east to attend radiotherapy in Waterford and Cork as part of their treatment. There are eight SERT vehicles on the road now based in Waterford, Dungarvan, Kilkenny, Wexford and Clonmel and are driven by teams of volunteer drivers.

    The run will begin in the IDA Business Park across from the Whitfield Clinic. All vehicles will gather here from 10am. All vehicles will be on view for all the family and friends. It makes for a great day out where there will be amenities such as a bouncy castle for the kids. All are welcome.

    There is an undeniable trend that has seen the considerable growth of Farmer's markets in Ireland in recent years. Markets have come a long way; from humble beginnings when farmers sold fruit and vegetables direct from their farms to a flourishing industry that sees sausage makers, cheese producers, bakers and choclatiers displaying their unique and original produce in vibrant and congenial settings.

  • Waterford families spend only 8 minutes sharing a family meal per day

    New research into Irish Family meal times, and attitudes to cooking with rice, undertaken by Uncle Ben's to launch the ‘Begin with Ben' campaign, has revealed that the average time Waterford families spend together over the course of a week enjoying family meals is a maximum of 50-60 minutes. When broken down, that is an average of only 8 minutes per day! It appears a number of factors such as working long hours and family pressures have taken their toll on family meal times, resulting in a serious lack of time available to families to spend quality time and enjoy each other's company over a home cooked meal.

    Fred head out on an extensive Irish tour this month to launch their brilliant 4th album, "Leaving My Empire", including a date at the Forum Lounge in Waterford this Friday, 20th May.   • WCTU celebrates Africa Day

    John Coltrane - Jazz, Racism & Resistance

    A public talk under the above title will be held on Wednesday 25th May in Greyfriars, Waterford at 8pm. Organised by the Waterford Council of Trade Unions.

    The presentation will focus on the music of John Coltrane. "Trane" arrived at that point in history, where his innovations within the great Afro-American music called Jazz coincided with the struggle for civil rights and real change in the United States. As he developed his musical voice it became the voice of resistance to racism for the Afro-American.

    Martin Smiths multimedia presentation is delivered with a passion and commitment for the music and a profound hatred of racism to give us a deep and rounded portrait of the great black musician John Coltrane.

    Martin Smith is a London born author and long time anti-racism activist associated with the anti-Nazi league.

  • The Swimming naked prophecy and 36 frames exhibitions

    Two new exhibitions are about to open at Garter Lane Galleries.

    36 Frames is a photographic exhibition by Waterford's PhotoNerds Camera Club members. The Swimming Naked Prophecy is an exhibition that was curated by Nora Hickey and Eilis Lavelle of the Mermaid Arts Centre Bray and includes works by 25 Irish-based artists.

    Both exhibitions will officially launch concurrently on Saturday 21st May 2011 at 4.30pm at Garter Lane Theatre Gallery, 22a O'Connell Street and 5.30pm at Garter Lane Gallery, 5 O'Connell Street, Waterford.
