Dental disease and how it affects your pet

Dental disease is a very common problem in pets; in fact, one study showed that 80% of dogs and cats aged over three years suffer from some degree of dental disease. It varies widely in its severity, ranging from a mild build up of plaque or gingivitis to a large amount of tartar, tooth decay or painful mouth infections.

The symptoms of dental disease include:

    - Halitosis (foul smelling breath)

    - Gingivitis (painful, inflamed gums)

    - Plaque build up (soft, yellow material on the enamel)

    - Tartar accumulation (harder, brown material that comes after plaque)

    - Mouth pain (rubbing at mouth with paws, difficulty eating)

    - Irritability/aggressiveness when touched around the mouth area

Gingivitis causes the gums to become undermined and detached from the tooth surface, meaning

These situations are scarcely worth more than a hill of beans, and are probably the cause of more problems in this world than the international financial crisis and global warming put together! • Strange but - True!

    Wednesday, 18th May 2011

By Bill Sones and Rich Sones, PhD

    Q. Some sentences don't make sense when written but do when spoken. Can you think of any?

    A. "There are three TOOs in the English language" is an example which when heard readily suggests "to," "two," and "too," says Anu Garg in "The Dord, the Diglot, and an Avocado or Two." There are also some puzzles that work better when spoken, such as "What word begins with a T, ends with a T, and is full of T?" Did "full of T" tip off the mystery "teapot"?

    Q. Are you smarter than your calculator? For example, can you solve 2 + 3 x 5 = ?

    A. It's easy to see that 2 + 3 = 5, and 5 x 5 = 25, says Keith Gregson in "Understanding Mathematics." So is this the answer? If you take

  • Water & your garden

    Wednesday, 18th May 2011

Did you know that the average daily water consumption per person in Ireland is over 148 litres? That's enough water to fill almost 2 baths. As our country grows and develops, there is a growing demand on our water supply. In order for us all to enjoy our reserves we need to be more aware of water conservation, particularly in our gardens during the summer months.

Tips to Conserve Water in your Garden this summer:

    1. Don't Hose that Path

Paths, patios and driveways must never be hosed as this wastes water. Use a yard brush, a rake or an outdoor blower for cleaning.

    2.Collect Rainwater

Collect Rainwater in a water butt fed from your gutters but always make sure to securely cover large containers for safety. Never use a sprinkler system in your garden.

    3. Watering Cans.

If you have to water plants do so in

    Ferns and allies - Ferns

Think back 10 –12,000 years to the end of the last ice age. Now, think back some 18,000 years to before the beginning of this era. Now imagine this cycle happening in a successive way for a million years, then 10 million years and 100 million years and ask yourself a question – ‘was there any wildlife in Waterford at that time'? The short answer to this is ‘yes'! How do we know you may well ask and the short answer again is that ‘it is still here'! As elsewhere, the local wildlife is made-up of two main groups – flora and fauna. The local fauna that weathered the successive ice ages is represented here by such orders as dragonflies and woodlice and other primitive macro organisms. However, a prerequisite of their presence is the flora

  • A Government Success

Once in a blue moon. As rare as hen's teeth. A Government success. Each of those three sentences are as unusual and as rare as each other. But the last one seems to be about to take place. The Government has announced that it plans to give each child in the State a second year of free pre-school. It might not sound like earth shattering news but if it does happen then it could be one of the most significant things that this Government has done since it took office. Any money that is given over to education is a …
