Food labels to include transfats, but you'll have to search for it

A top EU committee has bowed to big business this week by deciding not to publish nutritional information in its most visible form on food packaging. MEPs in Brussels voted against front-of-pack labelling for fats, sugar and salt in a move that's been roundly condemned by consumer groups. If the decision is rubberstamped by the European Parliament in July, it will mean that only calorie information will be published on the front of packaging, with eight other nutritional categories hidden away on the back.

Incoming Munster MEP Phil Prendergast says the decision contradicts all evidence of what works best for consumers when trying to choose healthier food. "People need to be able to see nutritional information easily and quickly so that they can make healthy choices,"

  • State Assets Firesale was pre-determined agenda - Clr. Walsh

    Wednesday, 27th April 2011

Workers' Party Councillor, Davy Walsh, has said that the report of the Review Group on State Assets and Liabilities, led by economist Dr. Colm McCarthy, proposes to hand all the state's commercial assets to the very individuals who have landed the Irish people in the present mess.

Cllr. Walsh, remarking that the Workers' Party was the only political party in the state to make a formal submission to the review group, said that it was incredible that the prime advocates of privatisation such as Minister Leo Varadkar had not seen fit to put their views on paper. "I can only assume that they failed to do so because they knew that the fire sale of assets would be the only issue on the cards for McCarthy and his group"

    What is a Will?

A Will is a legal document which contains your wishes in writing as to what you want to happen to your possessions following your death. It states your intentions for the care of your dependents following your death. Who can/should make a Will?

Anyone over the age of 18 or who is married can make a Will. The Succession Act also sets out that you must be of sound disposing mind.

Paying rent to a non-resident landlord

Question: I'm just about to move into rented accommodation and I will be paying €1,000 a month. My new landlord lives in Australia. I've been told that I have to pay part of the rent to Revenue and that I am liable if I don't do this. Is this correct and how do I do this?

Answer: It is correct. If your landlord lives outside Ireland and you pay rent directly to them or to their bank account located in Ireland or abroad, you must deduct tax at the standard rate (20% in 2010) from the gross amount that you pay. This deduction is tax payable to Revenue from your landlord's income.

This means that you should deduct €200 from your monthly rent (?1,000 x 20% = €200). You pay your landlord the remaining €800 per month.

Google AlertWhen a company which has it's European Headquarters here in Ireland is called 'evil' and 'immoral' by M.P.s in The House of Commons you tend to sit up and take notice. The particular company that was being referred to was Google and the reason it had enraged M.P.s in London was because even though it has a big operation there and conducts a lot of business there it pays no corporate tax. It does this by having all of its financial transactions finished here in Ireland. And the company here is …
