  • World Famous Photographer Commences Work On The Face Of Waterford

    World renowned photographer / visual artist KEVIN ABOSCH, known for his portraits of some of the world's most celebrated entertainers, artists and dignitaries (Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, Stephen Spielberg, Kofi Annan, etc.) is coming to Waterford in 2011 to commence work on "THE FACE OF WATERFORD". The project is a series of hundreds of portraits of the citizens of Waterford whereby the community itself is manifested as art through the lens of Abosch.

    THE FACE OF WATERFORD is the first of a 3 – phase plan, The second phase entails a public exhibition and book, both to be rolled out in summer 2011 followed by phase 3, a documentary film.

    An emotionally charged and uplifting documentary film celebrating Waterford as the oldest city in Ireland, which also happens to be one of the world's most progressive when it comes to health care.

  • Waterford Concert Orchestra set to lift the spirits

    In this time of doom and gloom isn't it great to see that there are those out there who are determined to raise our spirits with light entertainment. Waterford Concert Orchestra comes to life in April bringing light classical music to the people of Waterford and Dungarvan.

    This group of 35 musicians are really looking forward to having fun themselves as they entertain Waterford audiences with music by such famous names as John Williams (Star Wars, Superman, Indiana Jones etc.), Lloyd Webber (The Phantom of the Opera), Cole Porter and Louis Armstrong to name just a few. Having wowed Waterford audiences at the Waterford International Festival of Music, this group hopes to bring a series of varied concerts to audiences in the south east through the year.

    The countdown to the 2011 Waterford Massed Band Charity Concert is well under way and another very special night in an electrical atmosphere in the majestic surroundings of the Sacred heart Church, The Folly, Waterford. The concert that has been described as a concert for the people, a concert that stands out has contributed thousands of euro to a list of charities that has gone into double figures.

    The Barrack Street Concert Band, City of Waterford Brass, De La Salle Scouts Pipes Band and T.F.     Random Focus is an eclectic mix of images by 4 local photographers, embracing a range of subjects which are close to their hearts.   • Waterford Students To Fore In Art Competition

    A total of 401 students from Waterford city and county have entered paintings in this year's 57th Texaco Children's Art Competition. Overall, in excess of 30,000 entries were received with students from each of the 32 counties taking part.

    Judging is currently taking place and winners will be announced in early-April. This will be followed by the prize-giving ceremony which takes place in May.

  • Flahavan's wins special award at Irish Food Awards

    The award was given to Flahavan's for the investment it has made in environmental initiatives in its oatmill at Kilmacthomas, Co Waterford. Some of the initiatives include generating power from the river Mahon and state-of-the-art energy efficient dryers and boilers fuelled by oat hulls, a by-product of oats. Last year Flahavan's invested €500,000 in a storage unit for organic oats and has been persuading local growers to increase their acreage of organic oats, thus saving on air and sea miles. Flahavan's was among five Irish food producers who were awarded for their standards of excellence and exceptional contribution to Ireland's reputation as a top food producing country.

    Waterford Lions Club have supported The Waterford Marine Search and Rescue service with a donation of €2,000 that has been used to fit out the Service's van with equipment required to support their crew members. The Waterford Marine Search & Rescue service was set up in January 2010 to provide Waterford city and county with a 24 hour; 365 days-a-year search and rescue service. Since January, 25 volunteer crew members have been trained in VHF radio, Level 2 power boating, cardiac first responder and Navigation.

    Two European Masters titles for Joe Gough

    Pride of place this week has to go to Joe Gough West Waterford AC for his hugely successful and outstanding displays last week end. In Gent in Belgium came two brilliant performances by Joe at the European Masters Indoor Championships. Competing in the over 55 section 58 years old Joe came home with two gold medals having won both the 800 and 1500 metres titles. On Thursday he started off his campaign in the heats of the 800 metres and in easily finishing second he qualified for Fridays final. In that final against eight other athletes he was always well placed and decided to make his move 250 Metres from home and it proved decisive as he readily opened an eight metre gap between himself and the other competitors and finished strongly to easily

    Waterford Orienteers will host a local orienteering event at the Faithlegg woods on the Minaun on Sunday March 27th. Start times from 11 to 1 p.m. Parking will be opposite the schoolhouse at Faithlegg.

    Congratulations to those who travelled to Fota gardens, County Cork for the Munster Primary schools championships. Lorna Aylward (5th) and Katie McGuire (10th) from St John of Gods finished well up the field out of 50 entrants. In the boys section, Conor Quinn (6th), Robert Pim (11th), Jacob Pim (25th) and Jamie McCarthy (27th) brought Dunhill National school home in bronze position out of a field of 95 entrants.
