  • Know Your Rights - checking your credit history

    Wednesday, 26th March 2008

Question: I recently applied for a loan but the application was refused. Is there a credit history record that banks use in deciding whether or not to approve a loan? Can I check my credit history record to make sure that it is accurate? Answer: The Irish Credit Bureau (ICB) is the main consumer credit reference agency in Ireland and most lenders in Ireland subscribe to it. They submit information to the ICB about their borrowers and apply to it for details of the credit-worthiness of individuals who may have loans with other lenders. This information may influence a lender when deciding whether to give a loan. A borrower's credit record holds details of repayments made on loans, missed payments or failure to clear off a loan. Records remain on the ICB database for five years after a loan

  • Strage But True

    Wednesday, 26th March 2008

    Q. The giant hornet "Vespa mandarinia japonica" invades a hive of Japanese bees upon which it preys but they will have none of it. Within 20 minutes, the hornet is dead, even though the bees didn't sting, bite, crush or suffocate it. So what is their surprising weapon? A. Body heat. Hundreds of the hive defenders form a huge compact bee ball around the invader and raise their body temperatures from a normal 35C to 48C, say David Halliday et al. in "Fundamentals of Physics." This higher temperature is lethal to the hornet but not harmful to the "hot-tempered" bees.

    Q. A taxi company has as its policy to run its cabs with older, well-worn tyres and to underinflate them to boot. Penny-pinching economics, or a pinch of chicanery? A. It's well known that older, worn tyres have

  • Clarity needed on Funding Provision for Speech & Language Therapists - Inclusion Ireland

    Wednesday, 26th March 2008

Inclusion Ireland CEO Deirdre Carroll says the words of the Taoiseach and the Disability Minister regarding the lack of therapists for children and adults with intellectual disability do not correspond with the actions of the HSE.  Ms. Carroll is responding to recent comments by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern that the HSE has the money to appoint speech and language therapists. "It is worrying that while Minister Devins and the Taoiseach appear to be aware of the shortage of therapists, the HSE’s actions do not reflect what they are saying." A delegation from Inclusion Ireland raised this issue during a recent meeting with the new Minister for Disability and Mental Health Services Jimmy Devins TD.

In a television interview (10/03/2008) the Taoiseach said "In the disability sector I understand they have the money and they will be able to take on the

  • Putting the spring back into your step

    Wednesday, 26th March 2008

With the warmer weather on the way, many of you will be looking forward to getting back into your gardens and I can hardly blame you. However if the heart is willing but the knees are not, don’t despair. Achy joints, caused by general wear and tear on cartilage, are one of the most common health complaints.

Fortunately there is a nutritional substance that might help. Collagen! Most of us think of skin and wrinkles when we hear the word 'collagen’ and while it does form an important part of the skin, it is also the key protein in cartilage, tendons, ligaments and bones. Normally there is a smooth layer of cartilage that acts as a cushion between the bones of a joint, but in some people this essential cartilage thins as the joints are used and the bones may
