Chance slips by Waterford Senior Hurlers went to Nowlan Park in Kilkenny on Sunday last in the knowledge that a win would see them leapfrog Kilkenny and could well define their progress in the Allianz National League. A loss and they would be more or less out of contention for a top two spot and with it a place in the National League final. In the event it was the home side who came out on top in a lacklustre affair which saw six points (2-16 to 1-13) between the sides at the close of play. Some seven and a half thousand patrons converged on the Marble City venue for this meeting of the great rivals. Waterford have given a real opportunity to youth throughout the opening games of the league and this continued on Sunday with a number of the

    Under 6&8 hurling

Ferrybank under 6 and under 8 played against Sacred Heart last Saturday. Both Ferrybank teams excelled themselves today, with the combination of the regular team, plus the bonus of new players, they proved themselves a force to be reckoned with. A special thanks to all the parents (especially the mothers and friends) who got the kids ready and to the venue on time. Their support was incredible, and the kids felt like superstars. There was a noticeable improvement in the hurling skills and teamwork in all the kids, and their will be another match in a couple of weeks, so keep up the practice, and attend the training sessions on Saturday mornings at 10am. Once again we would welcome any new players (from Junior Infants upwards) particulary those living in the local area, but not attending Ferrybank National

    Senior Hurlers

Last Thursday saw the seniors play their first competitive game of the year in a tournament which was hosted by the St. Molleran's Club in Carrick-Beg. The game last Thursday was the quarter-final against Carrick-Swans. Mount Sion fielded a side with a number of notable absentees including Tony Browne and Eoin McGrath who are on county-duty, however the man of the moment Ken McGrath was available for selection. Swans struck first but Ken McGrath opened Sion's account moments later. Both sides went point for point but it was Ian Galgey's goal that gave Sion a two point margin lead at half time. Sion dominated the second half with some fine scores coming from Michael Frisby, Ken McGrath, Ian Galgey, Brian Cusack and both Martin O'Neills. A late rally by the Swans was too late as Martin O'Neill closed the

    Intercultural Hurling Blitz

Last Friday in Mt Sion GAA Grounds the 1st ever Intercultural Hurling Blitz took place for Primary Schools. The blitz was jointly organised by the Integration and Support Unit in the Edmond Rice Heritage Centre and Waterford C&GD. 8 teams from various CBS schools took part in the blitz in glorious sunshine. Mt Sion and Glor na Mara represented Waterford with schools from Kilkenny & Wexford also taking part. There were players from the various counties along with players from approx 10 other countries and it was great to see the integration on all teams. After a great tournament Kilkenny CBS emerged the winner and their Latvian captain Gurst accepted the GAA/ISU Shield on behalf of his delighted teammates. Thanks to all players, schools and teachers for ensuring the blitz was a great success and we are already

    Training

U9's: It was another great turnout for Under 9's training on Saturday last. The good weather seemed to have a marvellous effect on the hurlers as they diligently went through their drills with great enthusiasm. After this they had a match which was a hotly contested affair. For the green team Thomas Delaney was in sparkling form at half back, clearing a lot of ball out of his defence and at one stage covered a lot of ground to get a decisive block in that saved a certain goal. At the other end Luke Kelly played a captain's role between the posts keeping a clean sheet before coming out into a defensive role to drive his team on. No training this Saturday, 2nd April 2011.

U10's: Our U10 teams travelled to Carriganore on Friday last for the Blitz. We were well

    Another podium finish for Martin

Martin Kirwan travelled to Naas recently to take part in the 3rd race of their duathlon series where they had a huge entry field of almost 200 competitors despite the bitter cold which always seems to accompany the races held there in the Punchestown race course. The 1st run is shorter than usual at just 3.5k so the speed and pace set is painful. Martin came back in 4th position after the run, losing a good 20 secs in transition to his nearest competitors before heading out on the undulating, windy 20k bike course. This is Martin's strong point and once he got his breath back after the run, he powered his way up into 3rd position which he held onto for the 2nd run to finish 3rd overall in 58.03mins, his 2nd podium finish in

    Ladies Division 2

Waterford Ladies Div 2 team played their final match of the season against Catholic Institute at Newtown on Sunday last. The umpires were Keith Fishbourne and Jack O'Byrne. Catholic Institute were hungry from the whistle and scored in the first ten minutes. The team pressed up from the defence very well and had good solid fast passes and set pieces. Waterford pushed hard through the midfield of Shirley Moore, Hilary Johnson and Kim Phelan. Jessica O'Brien was adaptable and played upfront, usually playing the defence. Due to the presence of the press from Institute, once Waterford breaked there was plent of space up front. Waterford earned a short corner from an excellent cross from Laura Kavanagh. Hilary Johnson passed the ball right to Stacey Browne and took it back again to slot a ball in the left corner

Major victory for Kate Veale in Slovakia

On Saturday morning last in Dudince, Slovakia came yet another top class display by Kate Veale, the brilliant young West Waterford AC walker. Competing in her first ever race over the 10km distance came a performance that exceeded all expectations. In a junior race against athletes from countries renowned for race walking she put on a brilliant show to easily win the race and in the process set a new Irish junior record of 46 minutes 43 seconds and beat the old mark set in 2003 by Ann Loughnane by 1 minute and 35 seconds, and by all accounts Kate finished Saturdays' race looking remarkably fresh. Then to really put the icing on the cake her winning time was easily inside the qualifying time for the European Junior Championships in Talinn in July and

  • A Government Success

Once in a blue moon. As rare as hen's teeth. A Government success. Each of those three sentences are as unusual and as rare as each other. But the last one seems to be about to take place. The Government has announced that it plans to give each child in the State a second year of free pre-school. It might not sound like earth shattering news but if it does happen then it could be one of the most significant things that this Government has done since it took office. Any money that is given over to education is a …
