Grand Opening – Dublin By Roddie Cleere

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the passing of Philip Lynott. In those twenty-five years many tribute nights, exhibitions and documentaries about this charismatic man have made their way into the public's attention. 2011 has so far been a very eventful one for anyone with any interest in the man's life and music. In January, the annual Vibe for Philo saw almost 2,000 people from all over the world gravitate to Vicar Street in Dublin to pay homage to Ireland's first true rock star. In February, the latest incarnation of Thin Lizzy, which included Scott Gorham, Darren Wharton and the ever-popular Brian Downey, played to a sold out Olympia Theatre. The exhibition, which is housed in the upper gallery at St. Stephens Green Shopping Centre, is said to be the largest of its

New Video From King Kong Company

Between 1996 and 2001, King Kong Company wowed audiences the length and breath of the country.

Gigs at Homelands, The Red Box, The Gaiety,The Olympia and our very own Garter Lane have been long etched into the minds of those who attended. The six piece band made dance music at a time when bands didn't make dance music. Each band member also brought their own influences to the music, from techno and drum and bass through to ska and reggae, it's all in there, somewhere. After a 10 year hiatus the band announced in January they would get back together to re-edit some older tracks and work on some new material. At the beginning of February, the band released a re-edit of the classic Dr. Whom track, complete with a video that has been clocking up

Munster school wins first stage of EU video contest

An imaginative and clever video put together by students from Presentation Secondary School in Thurles, County Tipperary, has been chosen as the Ireland South entry in this year's My Vision for Europe contest. A group of Transition Year students beat off competition from dozens of other schools across Munster with their creative short segment, which uses a roving reporter approach to portray a futuristic EU and its achievements. The four-minute video can be viewed on the website www.myvisionforeurope.com. It will be judged against competing entries from the three other Irish constituencies in the national final, due to take place in the Irish Film Institute in Dublin later this month. Martin retains title at Tramore Duathlon

Last weekend saw the first of the local duathlons take place with the annual duathlon in Tramore with over 200 competitors take part amid glorious sunshine which brought 30 of our own club members to the start line. The 1st 3k run started off at a blistering pace with our own John McDonald, Martin Kirwan and Jim Baldwin in the middle of the leaders coming back into Transition for their bikes. Martin lost a lot of time trying to close his helmet and gave away a good bit of a lead before he finally got out on the bike. Fuelled up on annoyance at himself, he pedalled hard to overtake everyone and by the time he got on to the Waterford road had put himself in the lead. He maintained this lead for the 16k

  • Carrick-on-Suir Triathlon Club

    Wednesday, 9th March 2011

Last Saturday Carrick-on-Suir Triathlon Club hosted 'Conquer the Comeraghs' Duathlon race. It was another great day in the south-east, with dry roads and no wind to contend with. The race itself posed enough challenges to the competitors. The race included a 5k run on the rolling hills around Rathgormack, followed by an out and back 20k bike ride with a series of short climbs, followed by longer climbs and then technical and very fast downhills, it was then a two lap, 3k, run to finish, which coincidently also involved a hill. Conquer the Comeraghs is not a race for the weak, and this years race certainly highlighted the skill level that is on the Duathlon circuit these days.

45 people stepped up to the starting line ready to brave the Comeraghs. The race started at a spectacular pace despite the inclines

    Waterford show determination in defeat

Waterford faced Tipperary in the Allianz National Hurling League on Saturday last and despite the five point (1-20 to 0-18) defeat the Deise came away with a huge amount of credit. The Premier are a formidable opposition on any occasion but given that Waterford played most of the second half with just thirteen players, following the dismissal of both Shane O'Sullivan and Clinton Hennessy, the management team will be more than happy with the determined performance they got from their charges. There was a paltry attendance in Semple Stadium for the occasion. The All-Ireland champions against the Munster champions and the novel setting of the game under lights but, I guess it is just a sign of the times.

Waterford came into the game on the back of a league win over Wexford and a share of

    Under 9 Blitz

We entered 4 equal ability teams in the U9 indoor blitz on Saturday last. Team W, based at WIT, won their two games played against De La Salle and Sacred Heart. Cillian O'Sullivan and Gavin Buckley were in sparkling form. Cillian defended exceptionally well and showed excellent vision, creating great scoring chances for his team mates. Gavin was constantly on the ball and scored a sensational goal when in goal from a puck out! Conor Berry and Eoin Sharpe were a major driving force behind the victories, both scoring some fine goals and generally leading from the front. Conor Chesser showed some delightful touches, particularly off the wall, and scored some fine goals into the bargain. Jake Foley was unbeatable in defence and gave a lesson in striking while Patrick Fitzgerald broke the opposition defence's hearts with a

Not so GR8 G8With world attention on Fermanagh as the meeting place of the latest G8 Summit it is no wonder that locals are basking in the reflected spotlight. We have all been told, if we haven't already experienced at first hand, the beauty of the location.
