Three nights, three countries and Four Seasons with the Irish Chamber Orchestra

ICO enthusiasts will delight at the return of violin virtuoso Pekka Kuusisto and the Irish Chamber Orchestra for a Waterford Music concert in City Hall, Waterford on Friday 11th February. This concert features a delightful triptych of works, blending three countries with three musical traditions. Pekka Kuusisto performs Vivaldi's year in Italy alongside Irish and Finnish works. TC Kelly's O'Carolan Suite in Baroque Style (1978) and Timo Alakotila's Sketches from Folkscenes contrast two very unique styles of fiddle playing.

Kuusisto is versatile and distinctive, someone who demonstrates extraordinary individuality and imagination in his playing. He is unusually fluid in his approach and has been acclaimed for the spontaneity of his playing. Setting Pekka apart from most other violinists of his generation is his desire and ability to improvise and his

  • Oxegen 2011

Foo Fighters set to take our breath away at Oxegen 2011!

This year's Oxegen festival sees Foo Fighters, headed by NME Godlike Genius Dave Ghrol, take on the mantle of headliners!

While he was drumming with Nirvana, Dave Grohl was recording original songs at home that never received public release. Those tapes would become the foundation of the Foo Fighters, the band he formed in 1995, after the death of Kurt Cobain. Like Nirvana, the Foo Fighters melded loud, heavy guitars with pretty melodies and mixed punk sensibilities with a sharp sense of pop songwriting.

Dave Grohl began playing guitar and writing songs in his early teens, as well as performing with a variety of hardcore punk bands. In the late '80s, when he was still in his teens, he joined the Washington, D.C.-area hardcore band Scream as their drummer. During the final

Difficult economic times compels Waterford Businesses to re-assess their security needs

Advising The Book Centre on the best way of securing their premises is Joe Kennedy, Business Development Manager, CTS Tech, with Nellie Fagan, Manager, The Book Centre, Waterford.

A perceived increase in the number of break-ins and burglaries as a result of the economic downturn has led many commercial establishments and retail premises within Waterford City to re-assess their security requirements. A fear that property-related crime is increasing because of high levels of unemployment, lower salaries and increased financial burdens has led many commercial and retail owners to turn to security specialists such as CTS Tech to provide alarm monitoring and maintenance to ensure their premises are adequately protected and secured at all times.

Kelly puts pressure on Barroso over bailout

Munster MEP Sean Kelly paved the way for last week's Brussels meeting between Fine Gael's top brass and José Manuel Barroso when he confronted the European Commission President over the steep interest rate being applied to Ireland's EU-IMF rescue fund.

Taking the floor at the European Parliament chamber, Mr Kelly challenged Europe's most senior political leader by warning him that Ireland's economic situation would not improve unless the interest rate on the €85 billion bailout was addressed.

"I told President Barroso that although the general election would hopefully bring greater stability to Ireland, the borrowing rate of roughly six per cent would cripple our country. I asked him to use his influence to try and get it reduced," said Mr Kelly, adding that the Commission President assured him he would take his views into consideration.

Historic '3 in-a-row' victory for Waterpark College

On Friday last, February 4th, in a blustery Clonmel setting, Waterpark College created history by winning the Munster Schools O'Brien Cup for the third year in a row. They defeated SMI of Newcastle West on a scoreline of 7-0. Both schools had over 100 supporters each viewing a game that turned out to be an exciting battle.

Waterpark College started well, playing into a strong breeze and held onto the ball for long periods. However, they could not break down a strong SMI defence line. There was some outstanding carries from Shane Power, Darren Kelly and Terry Krubu. The backs marshalled their opposite numbers very well and anytime that they tried to move the ball, the boys representing Waterpark closed the space. As the first half drew to a close, the game was a

    Let's go for it

Following their exertions in the Munster Crystal Cup the Waterford hurlers have no time to put up their feet as they enter the cauldron of the National league on Sunday next against Dublin. With the benefit of the Munster competition behind them and a number of players not available through club and Third level competitions, Deise manager Davy Fitzgerald and his management team of Paraic Fanning and Pat Bennett have had the opportunity of a good look at the players already on the fringes and those making their debut on the panel.

I have said it before and will keep repeating the fact that a good league campaign can build momentum for a strong championship challenge. You hear people say "ah! the league is only the league". Teams that are successful in the league and, I might

Google AlertWhen a company which has it's European Headquarters here in Ireland is called 'evil' and 'immoral' by M.P.s in The House of Commons you tend to sit up and take notice. The particular company that was being referred to was Google and the reason it had enraged M.P.s in London was because even though it has a big operation there and conducts a lot of business there it pays no corporate tax. It does this by having all of its financial transactions finished here in Ireland. And the company here is …
