  • Waterford is the lowest city for rent increases in latest report

    Wednesday, 20th February 2008

The Daft.ie Rental report for the final quarter of 2007 has found that Waterford has had the lowest increase in rents among the five Irish cities with an increase of just 5.9%, which is below the average increase of six per cent nationwide.

The report by the property website, which was published last week, records a levelling off in rental rates across the country with a 50% increase in the number of properties on the rental market contributing to what it calls a 'stagnation' in rents.

The report also cites increases being their lowest in over three years.

However, the cities of Waterford, Limerick and Cork are well above the rest of Munster with the other counties and county areas in the province averaging just a three per cent increase in rents, well below the rate of inflation.

  • ICSA calls on EU Governments to stand up for European Agriculture at WTO

    Wednesday, 20th February 2008

ICSA president Malcolm Thompson has called for a concerted effort by EU governments to stand up for agricultural viability in Europe, given the very ominous tone of the latest WTO proposals.

"It's make your mind up time for EU Governments. The decision they must face up to is do they want a viable European agriculture or do they want to put the quality food supply in jeopardy and risk scarcity of key commodities. That is the stark reality of conceding to a deal that will put thousands of EU beef and lamb producers out of business," he warned.

Mr Thompson made his comments today (Monday) as EU farm ministers gather for the monthly Farm Council meeting. "The latest draft issued by WTO agriculture chairman, Crawford Falconer, is totally unbalanced and, in fact, demonstrates that the EU negotiator Peter Mandelson is making

  • Rowing – Great Start to New Year for WBC

    Wednesday, 20th February 2008

Waterford Boat Club (WBC) recently travelled to St. Michaels Head of the River in its first competition of 2008. This event is held annually at the town of O'Briens Bridge in Co. Limerick.

This year, however, the venue was moved to the National Rowing Centre (NRC) in Co. Cork due to the flooded conditions in Limerick caused by the recent unfavourable weather conditions. The event typically attracts the largest entry of any rowing event on the Irish racing, so the challenge in taking victory here would be immense for the WBC crews. Heads of the River are a time trial event where each boat races over a course of set length, in this case 3.5 km, and the fastest time of the day claims victory. This can be very challenging as the athletes do not have the competition in sight to

  • A Government Success

Once in a blue moon. As rare as hen's teeth. A Government success. Each of those three sentences are as unusual and as rare as each other. But the last one seems to be about to take place. It might not sound like earth shattering news but if it does happen then it could be one of the most significant things that this Government has done since it took office. Any money that is given over to education is a …
