  • Paul Doran

    Wednesday, 9th January 2008

    January 12 - March 2, 2008

Paul Doran is one of Ireland's finest painters. He makes complex paintings of great beauty and intensity that are celebrations of paint itself. His paint is exceedingly rich and luscious - in its texture and in its implications of high virtuosity.

Doran is a passionate painter of great ability and mastery of craft. His paintings are marvellously self-contained works - layers of oil paint on canvas stretched on wooden boards and worked on over time. Keys to the past reside in every new body of work where one finds references to the heavy impasto and physicality of earlier paintings. The paintings in this exhibition reveal the onset of new marks and shapes on the canvas - his visual vocabulary, punctuated with distinct twists and turns and new life experiences. Doran is an informed painter, a voracious

Rotate are back at The Forum on Friday 25th and bring with them Soydan, resident Will Power and very welcome guests, Inland Knights.

Laurence and Andy of Inland Knights met in 1993 through their involvement Dj'ing with the legendary UK free party crew - Smokescreen sound system. The crew of eight in total threw free, large-scale events at various locations across the English countryside. Utilizing rotating, secret venues, Smokescreen attempted to keep their renegade parties as underground as possible to avoid detection by local police - a feat they managed to accomplish on a regular basis. They also organized more legitimate events, such as nights in local clubs, and eventually took Smokescreen on tour, traveling across the European continent. All Smokescreen events featured deep house, with occasional back room sets of down tempo jazz and funk. Working with Smokescreen piqued

  • Festival Anyone?

    Wednesday, 9th January 2008

It has become somewhat of a likkle tradition here to big up the forthcoming blistering sunshine, and festival fever, in the early weeks of January, sort of makes the pain just a little more bearable. We also look back on last year's blasts in microcosm and reflect on what was, and sometimes what if. It all really kicked off with the less than happy go lucky mud fest that was Glastonbury 2007. The problem this year was glaringly obvious, and a little bit scary. You see the fact is that the over bloated contemporary names that managed to get themselves into headline slots just couldn't hold the attention. Bands like Arctic Monkeys, Killers, Kasabian and Kaiser Chiefs just don't have the wellie to command such respect. That ridiculous tribute act, The Who, just made it all very sad really. Oxegen,

  • Give it a Tri!

    Wednesday, 9th January 2008

It is the same story this time each year: a promise to work off those festive indulgences only to lose enthusiasm after just a couple of weeks! One reason many often falter is the lack of something concrete to work toward. You might think it daft but read on to see how Ireland's fastest growing sport, Triathlon, might just be for you.

Often thought to be only for fitness fanatics, Triathlon is in fact accessible to everyone. The three sports involved are swimming, cycling and running and up and down the country all ages and levels of fitness take part. The distances for each part of a Triathlon need not be of Herculean proportions either. In fact you can choose from very short races right up to the

  • A Government Success

Once in a blue moon. As rare as hen's teeth. A Government success. Each of those three sentences are as unusual and as rare as each other. But the last one seems to be about to take place. The Government has announced that it plans to give each child in the State a second year of free pre-school. It might not sound like earth shattering news but if it does happen then it could be one of the most significant things that this Government has done since it took office. Any money that is given over to education is a …
